The Road to Oklahoma!
Tuesday, June 27, 2017, 7:00pm
The Goodspeed

Join us for an exclusive member event that will explore Oklahoma!'s journey to The Goodspeed stage. Ted Chapin, President of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, will discuss the history and importance of this landmark musical. Director Jenn Thompson and Choreographer Katie Spelman will detail the inspiration behind Goodspeed’s production. Everything from the famous ballet to "the farmers and the cowboys" will be discussed. You won’t want to miss this first look at Goodspeed’s exciting summer production!

TED CHAPIN is President and Chief Creative Officer of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization. On his watch, there have been new major productions of their musicals on Broadway (seven Tony Awards for Best Revival so far), in London, and around the world. In addition to revivals, he has encouraged new Broadway productions, among them Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella and  Goodspeed’s very own Holiday Inn. Chapin was the co-founder of the Encores! series at City Center, chairman of the American Theater Wing, and has been a host and interviewer on many television shows and documentary films. Chapin currently serves on Goodspeed’s Board of Trustees.

JENN THOMPSON made her Goodspeed debut directing Bye Bye Birdie last summer and is returning this summer to direct Oklahoma!. Her recent production of Women Without Men for Off-Broadway's Mint Theatre Company has garnered 2016 Lortel and Off-Broadway Alliance Award nominations for Outstanding Revival, as well as 5 Drama Desk Award nominations, including Outstanding Director and Revival. Jenn served as Co-Artistic Director of Off-Broadway's TACT from 2011 to 2015. Connecticut audiences may also remember Jenn from her 19 seasons with award-winning River Rep at the Ivoryton Playhouse (just down the river from East Haddam). Jenn was a 2012 finalist for the SDC’s Joe A. Callaway Award for Excellence in Directing.

KATIE SPELMAN will make her Goodspeed debut as choreographer Oklahoma! Most recently, she served as Associate Choreographer for Amélie on Broadway, Assistant Choreographer for American Psycho on Broadway and Associate Director for the West End’s Close to You. Other New York credits include What’s It All About? (New York Theatre Workshop – Associate Director); Brooklynite (Vineyard Theatre – Associate Choreographer); Once (Broadway, first national tour – Associate Movement Director). She has also assisted and performed with Goodman Theatre, Writers Theatre, the House Theatre, Drury Lane in Oakbrook and Marriott Theatre.

Come From Away

As the cornerstone of Goodspeed’s New Works Program, our Festival of New Musicals gives audiences the chance to see new musicals at the very first stages of their development.

The highlight of our 2013 Festival was Come From Away and we’re  thrilled to let you know that this incredible new musical makes its Broadway debut this February after sold out productions in Washington, D.C. and Toronto.

Here’s a special offer to see this unique new musical.

ABOUT THE SHOW: The weather is wild, but the locals never lack for warmth. And it’s here, in Newfoundland, where a remote town became the epicenter of a remarkable true story filled with unusual characters, unexpected camaraderie and uncommon generosity. In a heartbeat, the town’s population doubled when 38 flights with 6,579 passengers were grounded on its doorstep. The locals put their lives on hold and opened their homes to a world of strangers. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships.

The Toronto Star calls it “a big-hearted, thoroughly enjoyable new musical” and The Seattle Times hails it as “rousing and inspiring. An honest depiction of compassion."
